RedCap Module aims to increase the reach of 5G IoT

Quectel’s RedCap Rx255C module series will help to extend the reach of 5G across more IoT and vertical industries.

The Snapdragon X35 modem-RF from Qualcomm is at the core of the Rx255C 5G NR Reduced Capacities (RedCaps) modules launched by Quectel. These wireless modules offer significant energy and cost-effectiveness, while also delivering a low-latency connection.

RedCap, a specification added to 3GPP Version 17 of 5G Nr Version 17, addresses wireless devices that do not require the full capabilities 5G NR. RedCap devices will enable a range of new mobile broadband scenarios and business sectors, such as entry-level internet, compute and industrial automation, smart cities and smart energy.

Rx255C modules are capable of supporting the sub-6 GHz band in 5G stand-alone (SA) mode, with a bandwidth maximum of 20 MHz. The series is compatible with LTE and nearly all major carriers worldwide. Theoretically the modules can transmit data up to 100 Mbps and 220 Mbps at their peak.

Customers can choose to change the number of antennas and reduce the transmitting/receiving bandwidth. They can also select an optional modulation of 64QAM/256QAM, which will reduce the size and cost of the Rx255C module. There are many interfaces available, including USB 2.0 and PCIe 2.0. You can also add features such as Voice over LTE or firmware upgrades over the air.

Quectel introduced the Rx255C Series at the Mobile World Congress 2023. Engineering samples of the Rx255C are expected to be available in the first half 2023. A datasheet was not available at the time of the announcement.
