ST Manufactures its Own NB IoT Module

STMicroelectronics created an internal module for the NB IoT cellular standard that includes GNSS satellite positioning as a result supply chain problems. Due to its internal design, the ST87M01 is able to be packaged into an LGA package that measures 10.6mm x 12.8mm.

ST uses a variety of technologies and products to enable next-generation IoT ecologies. These include microcontrollers and AI solutions as well as sensors, actuators and PMUs. It also makes use of interfaces, memory and other connectivity. The LTE Cat. NB2 NBIoT industrial module is fully programmable and covers all cellular frequencies globally. It also incorporates cutting-edge security.

The ST87M01 provides expanded coverage in multiple regions and is the first IoT-cellular product available worldwide that conforms to the latest 3GPP Release 15 standards. During NB-IoT sleeping periods, the embedded native GNSS with multi-constellation accessibility ensures enhanced localization and optimal power-saving features. The supply chain and the bill of materials is completely controlled by ST due to their comprehensive conception, design and industrialization.

The ST87M01 is designed to target a variety of IoT-related applications that require ultra reliable Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN). It has a temperature range of -40degC up to +85degC, and a very low power consumption (less that 2A when in low power mode).

These include applications for industrial condition monitoring, factory automation, smart farming, environmental monitoring, smart metering and grid, smart buildings, smart cities, and smart infrastructure. This is also suitable for tracking tasks such as finding lost children, pets or elderly people. It can also be used to track equipment, like power tools and track remote workers.

The STM8701 offers product designers flexibility as it provides a fully programmable IoT Platform that allows customers to insert their own code directly into the module for simple applications. The module can also be paired up with another host microcontroller to enable a variety of complex applications. A number of protocol stacks, including IPv6, TCP/UDP and CoAP/LWM2M are available to support IoT applications. The ST87M01 can also be configured to support both ST enhanced AT commands and common 3GPP At commands.

The modules are also equipped with a ST4SIM embedded Sim (eSIM), a technology that further enhances asset minimization, security and compliance to the latest industry standards. This includes the recently released GSMA eSA certification (Security Assurance). A cutting-edge security element (eSE) is also included.
