African Poaching is being combated using a new satellite IoT gateway

To stop poaching, Ground Control created a satellite IoT Gateway and tested it on Central Africa.

Ground Control teamed up with Digital Forest UK, a company in Central Africa to deliver a new IoT Gateway. Ground Control describes itself as an essential connectivity provider for satellite-based IoT, M2M and IoT (try saying it after a few drinks). The gateway’s goal is to provide a “reduced-cost message-based transfer”, by enabling a more effective transmission of ever larger data payloads, even from remote locations.

Digital Forest was able to integrate two-way communication into its systems during the trial using RockREMOTE. This satellite IoT gateway transmits 100 kilobytes per message.

Before this, they could only analyse data retrospectively. By then, the poachers would have likely moved on. They could now send satellite images in real time to rangers who are tasked with stopping illegal poachers.

The size of the market is still unknown, but it’s unlikely that something like the above example can be scaled very large, can you? This is a good thing, but it raises the question of just how many businesses will make money from the huge investments made in this area.
