Vodafone’s commercial LTE Cat-M (CATM) network in Italy successfully handled an Internet call. It is the first time in Europe that a VoLTE network call has been completed on live infrastructure.
The CAT-M Network is designed to support multiple Internet of Things devices (IoT), but without compromising the experience of smartphone users. This can be done via a single site for mobile phones. However, the bandwidth available is purposely limited.
This technology is useful in many ways. The technology will allow users to access data and voice support for their important gadgets. Vodafone says that this technology will be used for automated building services such as connected elevators, fire protection equipment and connected healthcare applications including wearable health monitors. This technology could also be used in new auto accident alarm systems.

CAT-M is a cellular IoT option for Narrowband IoT. It leverages 4G mobile networks and offers higher data rates and reduced latency. Vodaphone views the two technologies in a complementary way, with NB IoT used to connect devices that are hard to reach, such as underground sensors. It also uses NB IoT to monitor coastal erosion using ruggedized devices. These devices require only very low data rates, and they don’t have to be tracked when in motion.
Alberto Ripepi is Chief Network Officer of Vodafone. He said: “Our digital networks’ global reach and technologies play a crucial role in connecting machines and people in an emergency.”
This technology is ideal for monitoring and tracking essential goods, such as medical supplies. It also allows elderly people to live in safer homes and raise the alarm during an emergency. “We have now launched the first voice call system in Europe, having launched the first national network of its type in Italy,” he said.
