Olympus Supports Endoscopic AI Diagnosis Training for Doctors in India

Participating in Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications Project: “Survey Study on International Expansion of AI Diagnostic Support System Using Ultra High Magnifying Endoscopes In India”

Olympus Corporation, as a business promoter in collaboration with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, took part in a groundbreaking project entitled “Survey study for international expansion of AI Diagnosis support system using Ultra-High Magnifying Endoscopes” in India. The project aims at developing advanced endoscopy diagnosis in India, where endoscopists are few.

In collaboration with CYBERNET SYSTEMS CO.,. Olympus Ltd. has installed an AI diagnostic system at the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology in Hyderabad, India. AIG doctors were guided by Showa University Northern Yokohama Hospital’s specialist lecturers and physicians. They also taught AIG doctors how to teach the next generation of endoscopists.

AI Endoscopic Diagnostics

The project began on October 12. Satoshi Hemmi said at the kick-off event that “we hope to contribute to spreading AI endoscopy and developing medical care in India by training future leaders of AI endoscopy in India.” We hope that India-Japan cooperation in healthcare ICT continues to grow.

Olympus, in addition to its ultra-magnifying scope Endocyto that was released last December, will release AI-enabled endoscopic diagnostic software in India starting in December. In India, the endoscopic diagnostic software EndoBRAIN will be used for training physicians. Olympus will help develop physicians and promote endoscopic diagnostics.

Endoscopes that can magnify up to 520x in real-time. AI in-vivo real-time analysis of colon lesions captured with ultra-high magnification endoscopes. The figures indicate the possibility of both neoplastic or non-neoplastic neoplasms. This helps physicians to differentiate and detect polyps. AI-based endoscopic diagnostic software to assist physicians in diagnosing lesions. It alerts them if they detect a polyp, or any other lesion using colonoscope images.

Background to Olympus’ participation

The rate of cancer in India is expected to rise as the economy expands. On the other, there is an acute shortage of doctors that can perform precision diagnostics using endoscopes. This is essential for early diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Olympus took part in this project in order to provide trained AIG experts to train doctors in India, and other countries in the region. They also wanted to help popularize and develop endoscope diagnosis using the latest AI technologies.

Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications Project

The MIC aims at realizing the Sustainable Development Goal and SDG pledges in order to ensure that “noone will be left behind.” In addition, the MIC aims at disseminating and promoting an SDG+ICT model both domestically and abroad between the public and private sector. This project is aimed at introducing and disseminating Japan’s AI-based endoscopic diagnostic system in India and other neighboring countries to address the growing cancer rate in India.

The survey will collect information from major medical institutions, external research institutions, and investigate the spread of endoscopic systems.

Verification by proof-of concept tests in India. Showa University Northern Yokohama Hospital physicians will train AIG doctors in the detection of diseases using a colonoscope and discriminatory diagnosis. They will also train them to be lecturers who can train instructors. MIC provided training and equipment.
